Summer 2026: Season of Dreams

Summer arrives and with it dreams that not even the harshness of this past winter’s cold and ice could lock away: dreams as small and special as viewing the swift visit of a tiny hummingbird to a brightly colored flower or as broad and breath-taking as overlooking the vista of hills, woods and waterways from a height of land; dreams as exciting as the fastness and fury of a sudden seasonal storm or as calm and quiet as a good book or a hammock drowse; dreams as quickly passing as layers of rosy back-lit clouds in an evening sky and dreams as lifelong lasting as witnessing the enchanted smile of a child touched by the wonder and mystique of this special region.
Summer’s dreams are dreams of return: back to the fishing, the loons, the camps that wait to have dust covers removed and windows opened, the carpets of pine needles that are intended by Mother Nature to be left unswept to prevent runoff from the rains that will come, the towns and villages and roadside food venues that invoke a sense of community, the events where crowd civility still exists.
Summer stirs up dreams of a special cove or view or craggy landmark, memories of a road through farmlands and woods to ancestral compounds, of vacation traditions, of how following a whim that here would be a great area to visit and setting the pattern to revisit and revisit and revisit until here is the real home.
The dreams of summer invariably pivot us to the present, to the here and now, to today’s opportunities, today’ s sunsets, today’s closeness to the outdoors, nature, recreation, outdoor concerts and art exhibits and historic sites.
Summer is also the time for dreams of tomorrow, for setting up goals to get to know the area, for attending future camps or conferences or events, for attaining ever higher accomplishments in the world of recreation, for establishing annual family traditions, for learning the call of the loon, for finding a home away from home.
Summer on or near a lake in Maine is a dream. It is one of those experiences that cannot be adequately defined. It pervades the senses, lodges in the heart and lends its followers encouragement to survive locations and lifestyles that are less rewarding. A lake region summer can be imagined all through the long intervening seasons, but there is nothing like the real happening. It is a dream come true.
Welcome to the season of dreams.
