The Best Kept Secret, Part II

by Shannon Sprague

The Union Church of Belgrade Lakes through the leadership of the Missions and Outreach Committee is committed to serving our comrmmity by supporting the Belgrade Center for All Seasons. This is a gathering space in the center of the community, where neighbors of all ages come together to enjoy recreation, build relationships, and support one another. Although an obvious benefit of the church’s contributions is providing the material offerings, the true intention behind each and every act of service is to help foster and nurture a welcoming environment.

Some of the projects that the church and its members have been involved in include providing accessible swings and picnic tables for play and gathering spaces, making lifeguard chairs available for increased safety at the pool, donating a Gaga ball pit (if you’ve never played, it’s a blast), funding art classes for homeschooled children in hopes of enriching their learning and creative experiences. A recent donation included some Polywood benches for the Center and the beach locations where folks can gather, sit and enjoy each other’s company. The church has also helped with some improvements at the North Belgrade Center which serves as a gathering place for our community seniors and is home to the Belgrade Food Pantry.

One of the church’s most meaningful missions is to support the Campership Scholarship Fund which provides financial assistance (free or reduced rate) so that all children within the community have the same opportunity to attend camp, regardless of their family’s financial circumstances. The most important aspect of this assistance is the hope that even more children can enjoy the fun, friendships, and personal growth that summer camp has to offer! The church and Center have a common goal to make all things and all experiences accessible to all of our neighboring communities!

The church community is very excited to once again participate in the annual camper cookout scheduled for August 12 this year, where volunteers get a chance to wear silly hats while serving cookout food like hot dogs and hamburgers with all the-fixings, complete with ice cream. Although the food may be delicious, the blessing of this experience is time shared in community together. Campers and volunteers laugh, have fun, share stories and create lasting summer memories that will last beyond their time together.

Supporting the Belgrade Center for All Seasons is ultimately about much more than funding projects. It is about investing in relationships, nurturing a spirit of belonging, and joining together in the shared purpose-of serving our neighbors. Through this partnership, the church and the Center continue to strengthen the fabric of the Belgrade community — one act of generosity, one family, and one relationship at a time.
